Background

Albatross Shrink Wrapping was engaged by a wooden products manufacturer to assist a client in the Oil & Gas sector. The objective was to shrink-wrap specialized modules—large steel structures containing piping, sensitive electronics, and critical components—for export from Malaysia to the United States.

Why the service was needed:

  • Oversized Cargo: The modules were large steel structures, approximately 20-foot to 40-foot in size, that could not fit into General Purpose (GP) containers.
  • Sea Freight Protection: Since the cargo had to travel a long distance by sea to the US, it required more than standard packing.
  • Specialized Expertise: While the intermediary firm handled wooden crating, they required Albatross’s specific expertise to provide a complete, weather-proof shrink wrap seal for these high-value technical units.

The Challenges

This project presented significant logistical and environmental hurdles, split across two separate mobilization sessions.

 

  • Extreme Height: The modules stood 4–5 meters tall. When placed on the shipping racks and stems, the total working height reached approximately 6 meters.
  • Lack of Access Machinery: Due to time constraints and other unexpected reasons, the site eventually did not provide scissor lifts. The team had to rely on the client’s mobile scaffolding, making repositioning difficult and time-consuming.
  • Crane Limitations: Overhead cranes and boom lifts were required to position the film but were slow to deploy.
  • Unstable Footing: Wrapping the top of the modules required technicians to climb onto the units. The surfaces offered no stable standing platforms, requiring the use of safety harnesses and licensed climbers to execute the work safely at height.

The Albatross Solution

To overcome the lack of on-site support and equipment failures, Albatross adapted its operational approach:

  • Flexible Mobilization: Recognizing the client’s production struggles, Albatross split the project into two phases. After the initial delay, the team returned for a second intense 3.5-day session to clear the backlog once the units were ready.
  • Manual Adaptability: In the absence of functioning scissor lifts, the team utilized manual climbing techniques with strict safety protocols (harnesses) and utilized the limited boom lifts available to drape the film over the 6-meter peaks.
  • Resource Independence: Due to time constraints, the initially promised support manpower was not able to be fulfilled. Albatross deployed a fully self-sufficient team to handle all labor, ensuring the wrapping quality was not compromised by inexperienced helpers.

Outcome

Despite the difficult start and lack of machinery:

  • 6 Large Modules Completed: Albatross successfully wrapped 6 oversized Oil & Gas modules.
  • Ready for Export: The units were sealed against the corrosive marine environment, ensuring the steel structures and internal electronics would remain dry during the sea freight to the US.
  • Schedule Recovery: The team managed to complete the bulk of the work in the second session (approx. 4 days), effectively recovering the timeline for the shipping deadline.
