Protecting Multi Million Dollar High Value
Industrial Equipment for Safe Delivery to
an Oil and Gas Company in South Africa

Background

For this project, Albatross partnered with a renowned European manufacturer of liquid transfer systems, a company with nearly four decades of global operations and a state-of-the-art production facility in Malaysia.

The manufacturer is a key supplier to some of the world’s largest oil, gas, and petrochemical companies, producing high-precision marine, rail, and road loading arms used in industrial fluid transfer. With a reputation built on engineering excellence and durability, the company required an equally capable partner to safeguard its equipment during international shipment — ensuring that every component arrived in perfect working condition.

The Challenges

The assignment was to prepare several 30m × 30m marine loading arms for transport to a major oil and gas company based in South Africa. Due to logistical requirements, the cargo was shipped above deck, where it would face direct exposure to the marine environment for an extended voyage.

The primary risks included:
  • Corrosion and oxidation from saltwater and humidity.
  • Swivel joint vulnerability, as even slight rust or collision could compromise the equipment’s functionality.
  • Extended travel duration, heightening the risk of condensation buildup inside the protective layers.

For such critical and high-value equipment, failure to protect against corrosion could have resulted in costly downtime or operational failure upon arrival.

The Albatross Solution

Albatross engineered a comprehensive shrink wrapping and anti-corrosion strategy, integrating precise technical calculations, advanced protective materials, and skilled manpower:

  • Vacuum Packing of sensitive control panels to eliminate internal moisture.
  • VCI Paper (30G) and Defender Film applied as the first line of corrosion defense.
  • Heavy-Duty Shrink Wrapping, reinforced with shrink tape, to completely seal each unit.
  • Zipper Access Doors designed for easy inspection by the client’s QC team.
  • Desiccant Optimization, using exact cubic-meter calculations to determine silica gel quantities needed to prevent condensation.
  • Swivel Joint Protection, combining rust inhibitors and cushioning buffers to safeguard critical moving parts.
  • Professional Execution, led by 8 trained industrial shrink wrapping specialists using 6 high-performance shrink guns to achieve a perfect seal.
  • Proven track record in industrial shrink wrapping and corrosion prevention for maritime and offshore logistics.
  • Expertise in handling oversized, mission-critical equipment for the oil and gas sector.
  • Trusted by international manufacturers with uncompromising quality standards.
  • Delivering peace of mind that vital assets reach their destination fully protected and ready for use.

Outcome

  • The marine arms arrived in South Africa rust-free, collision-free, and ready for immediate operation.
  • Despite above-deck exposure, Albatross’ engineered preservation method maintained the equipment’s original integrity.
  • The successful delivery strengthened the client’s confidence in Albatross’ capability to manage large-scale, high-risk industrial shipments with technical precision.
